Paresh Maity (Bengali: পরেশ মাইতি)(Born in 1965 in
Kolkata, India) is an Indian artist. He lives and works in Delhi and
is married to artist Jayasri Burman.
He has a degree in Fine Arts from the Government
College of Art & Craft, Kolkata and graduated at the top of his
class with a Masters of Fine Arts from the Delhi College of Arts.
He has held 50 shows in about thirty years. He
gradually moved from atmospheric scenery to representations of the
human form. His more recent paintings are bold and graphic, with a
strong color and unusual cropping.
Paresh Maity has emerged as one of the most
promising young painters of contemporary Indian art. Though recognised as
a water colourist the young painter is equally at ease with oil on
canvas. Paresh started out as a painter in the academic style, but
over the years began to shift towards abstraction.
Gradually the imagery and form became more and
more abstract until the young painter with flourish of a brush laden
with transparent colours began to create paintings of great
evanescent beauty. Paresh's talent as a painter lies in his ability
to internalise the Indian experience and express it in a style which
is delightfully refreshing. For Paresh, life is a celebration. One
could very well describe him as a 'romantic' painter who paints not
only from his head but also from his heart.
In his short career span, Paresh has made a name
for himself in the Indian and international art world. He has won
many prestigious awards, which include awards from the Royal
Watercolour Society, London; Birla Academy of Art and Culture,
Kolkata; Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; Indo American Society,
Mumbai; Harmony Award, Mumbai; College of Art, New Delhi and AIFACS,
New Delhi. The most recent being an award from Royal Watercolour
Society, London in 2002.
Paresh Maity's works are in a number of collections,
including the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Modern
Art, New Delhi.
